iPhone 5c Sales Are Starting to Catch Up to iPhone 5s Sales
A new report from Localytics finds that San Francisco has the strongest preference for the iPhone 5s over the iPhone 5c and that the gap between iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c sales is starting to narrow.
After close to one week of sales, we found that, overall, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco held the largest market share in the U.S. for iPhone 5s and 5c activations. This is to be expected given the size of their populations. However the real surprise was that San Francisco came in third. Considering San Francisco is actually the 11th largest market in the U.S., its status as a technology haven also, clearly, translates to a culture of early adoption.

Leaked Video Allegedly Depicts 'Space Gray' iPad 5 and Retina iPad Mini Shells
Sw-box has posted two videos which allegedly show the rear shells for the iPad 5 and Retina Display iPad mini 2.
It compares the dimensions and the weight of iPad 5 with that of iPad 4's. The 239.20mm(H) x 169.5(W) x 7.2(D) new iPad proves to be slimmer, smaller and thinner than the 4th generation iPad. Comparisons are also made between specific features of the two Apple devices in question. It reveals their differences in speakers, volume buttons, the extra microphone hole, logos and holding feels. With the comparison, iPad 5 is likely similar to iPad Mini in appearance except size and the extra microphone hole.

Rhoda Alexander, director of Tablet and Monitor Research at IHS iSuppli, says that while the iPad 5 appears set for an October release, a Retina Display iPad mini 2 is less likely.

Judge Rules Apple Has Right to Use 'iPhone' Name in Brazil
Apple has won the right to use the 'iPhone' name in Brazil following a legal battle with IGB Electronica. Judge Eduardo de Brito Fernandes ruled against IGB who had filed a trademark for the name 'Gradiente iphone' in 2000 but wasn't granted the trademark until 2008.
In his ruling, Fernandes called Apple's iPhone "world renowned," the AFP reported Wednesday. The judge said that giving the Gradiente phone exclusive rights to the name wouldn't be fair to Apple since "all the (Apple) product's renown and client following have been built on its performance and excellence as a product." The judge also said that Gradiente's name just used a combination of "internet" and "phone" as a way to brand a mobile phone with Internet access, BNAmericas said. Apple already had an extensive "i" product line registered in several countries, according to the judge.

IHS Teardown Finds iPhone 5s Costs $199 to Build, iPhone 5c Costs $173 to Build
An IHS teardown of the new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c finds that a 16GB costs about $199 to build and a 16gb iPhone 5c costs around $173 to build.
According the findings of an IHS report coming tomorrow (but shared with AllThingsD today), Apple spends at least $191 on components to build a 16 gigabyte iPhone 5s. The cost rises to $210 for a 64GB unit. The cost of assembly adds another $8 per unit, bringing the range to between $199 and $218. That cost estimate is pretty close to that of the original iPhone 5, which IHS pegged at about $205 last year. Without a contract, the iPhone sells at prices ranging from $649 to $849, depending on storage capacity.

iPhone 5s Outsells iPhone 5c By 3.4x in the U.S.
Localytics has released a new report indicating that the iPhone 5s has outsold the iPhone 5c by a factor of 3.4x thus far.
In less than 3 days, the iPhone 5s and 5c combined now represent about 1.36% of the total numbers of all iPhones activated in the U.S. market across the top 4 carriers AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile. From the data we are seeing, 1.05% of all iPhones in the United States are now iPhone 5s and just 0.31% are iPhone 5c. That means that the iPhone 5s outshines the 5c by a factor of 3.4x, a clear indicator that the early adopters are favoring the high-end 5s compared to 5c. This makes sense since those who feel the need to buy a new device the very weekend it launches are most likely the power users who want the highest-end phone experience.

About Touch ID Fingerprint Sensor Security on the iPhone 5s
Apple has posted a help document outlining the security safeguards it takes for the new Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the iPhone 5s.
Security safeguards
Every fingerprint is unique, so it is rare that even a small section of two separate fingerprints are alike enough to register as a match for Touch ID. The probability of this happening is 1 in 50,000 for one enrolled finger. This is much better than the 1 in 10,000 odds of guessing a typical 4-digit passcode. Although some passcodes, like "1234", may be more easily guessed, there is no such thing as an easily guessable fingerprint pattern. Instead, the 1 in 50,000 probability means it requires trying up to 50,000 different fingerprints until potentially finding a random match. But Touch ID only allows five unsuccessful fingerprint match attempts before you must enter your passcode, and you cannot proceed until doing so.

Apple iPhone 5s Benchmarks Reveal Significant Performance Improvements
iOS 7 Release Date Set for Today: What Time Will the Software Roll Out?
The iOS 7 release time is not official yet, but thanks to Apple’s predictable schedule, we have a good idea of when you can expect the iOS 7 download and update option on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
Apple announced the iOS 7 release date of September 18th earlier this month, but in typical Apple fashion the company didn’t disclose all of the details, including the iOS 7 release time.

The first reviews of the new iPhone 5c have been published online. Here's an overview from various publications.
TechCrunch:
The 5c is probably more broadly appealing than the iPhone 5s just by virtue of its lower cost of entry, but it’s still premium hardware and is likely better thought of as an analogue to the iPhone 4S relative to the iPhone 5 back when that device launched. But the 5c also has a focus on color, personality and a sort of ‘lightness’ of design. The phone feels ‘young’ overall, and it’s likely that’s the kind of consumer that’s going to enjoy this device; the youth market and those just getting their first smartphone or moving up from their first budget Android device to the big leagues.

The First iPhone 5s Reviews Have Been Published
The first reviews of the new iPhone 5s have been published online. Here's an overview from various publications.
TechCrunch
With the iPhone 5s, Apple once again wins the right to claim the title of best smartphone available. The hardware may resemble its predecessor in many key ways, as with the 4-inch Retina display, but it improves dramatically in areas like the camera where it makes the most difference to every day users, and in the addition of the fingerprint sensor, which is already a feature I miss when I switch back to older generation devices or the iPhone 5c. And thanks to the 64-bit A7 processor, this phone, more than any iPhone before it, is likely to be the device that grows more appealing as the software ecosystem catches up, which is great news for buyers looking for something that isn’t so easily replaced by the next big thing that comes along.
