Apple patent detailing solar-powered laptop with dual-sided display
AppleInsider reports Apple has been awarded a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office showing an "electronic device display module" for a laptop that would include the ability to act as a secondary rear display featuring touch controls. The patent also details a photovoltaic system located in the display unit which could power the device with solar energy.
This patent was originally filed in 2012 and details a portable computer that would encompass both upper and lower housings, consisting of materials such as glass, carbon fiber, metal and ceramic. The rear housing of the computer will probably feature a logo similar to Apple's current line of MacBooks, but would be made of a patterned ink layer instead of a plastic material.

iOS Plagued by Organizational Issues in the Car Development
According to The Information's Jessica E. Lessin, organizational issues have been plaguing Apple's development of iOS in the Car.
Because iOS in the Car did not fit well into an existing hardware or software team at Apple, executives "didn't quite know what to do" with the program.
The disconnect is attributed primarily to overarching organizational issues that are said to place pressure on non-hardware products that do not fit within existing teams.
Even in the lead-up to iOS in the Car's high-profile unveiling at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference last June, executives were reportedly still unsure about the product's future.

Apple iPhone 6 to release with sapphire glass solar power panel this year
The latest report suggests Apple will use sapphire glass for the iPhone 6 to function also as solar charging panel for the device.
In February 2013, Apple filed a patent for an integrated touch sensor and solar assembly. The patent reads:
Integrated touch sensor and solar panel configurations that may be used on portable devices, particularly handheld portable devices such as a media player or phone are disclosed. The integrated touch sensor array and solar cell stack-ups may include electrodes that are used both for collecting solar energy and for sensing on a touch sensor array. By integrating both the touch sensors and the solar cell layers into the same stack-up, surface area on the portable device may be conserved. In addition to being used for capacitive sensing, the integrated touch sensor and solar panel configurations may also be used for optical sensing.

NSA servers collecting personal data sent by iPhone applications
The U.S. NSA looks for data sent by iPhone apps in order to get personal data on targets, according to a new report from The New York Times and some other news agencies.
The secret report noted that the profiles vary depending on which of the ad companies — which include Burstly and Google’s ad services, two of the largest online advertising businesses — compiles them. Most profiles contain a string of characters that identifies the phone, along with basic data on the user like age, sex and location. One profile notes whether the user is currently listening to music or making a call, and another has an entry for household income.

iPhone is replacing hotel room keys in new pilot program
A new pilot program is being implemented at Starwood Hotels & Resorts that will see two key hotel locations in Manhattan and Silicon Valley allowing guests to get into their rooms with their smartphones.
After installing the Starwood Preferred Guest (SGP) App, guests will receive a virtual key on their iPhone, which can be used to unlock a door with a tap using Bluetooth 4.0. The newer Bluetooth specification, first introduced with the iPhone 4S, has been used in a similar way for many home locking products like the Lockitron and the August Smart Lock, but never has this been used on larger scale.
"We believe this will become the new standard for how people will want to enter a hotel," says Frits van Paasschen, Starwood's CEO. "It may be a novelty at first, but we think it will become table stakes for managing a hotel."
Starwood officials are hoping that the technology will become the standard for hotels in the future, replacing traditional hotel check-in methods.

Earnings call revealed Apple saw lower than expected iPhone 5C sales in U.S., primarily because iPhone 5S sales exceeded Apple's projection.
According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, the company's iPhone sales growth in North America was not as high as in some other countries probably because Apple underestimated demand for the iPhone 5S, with the iPhone mix being "different than we thought." He also mentioned changes to domestic carrier upgrade plans as a partial reason for weaker-than-expected iPhone sales in the U.S.
While Apple did not break down sales between individual iPhone models, the company indicated that the iPhone 5C ended up representing a smaller mix of iPhone sales than was anticipated.

Apple reveals uses for Sapphire Glass in new patent app
United States Patent and Trademark Office published an Apple patent application detailing methods of using and mounting sapphire to mobile devices.
The application supposedly describes a system in which sapphire could act a display’s cover glass and gives insight how the material could be used to dissipate heat generated by a device. It describes the difficulty in attaching sapphire to existing materials and notes the current implementation of sapphire as a cover for the rear camera oh the iPhone.
Apple reveals effective methods for using sapphire as a cover glass would involve creating an aperture within a sapphire substrate, after that using a second material with a lower melting point like metal or plastic to pour into the aperture.
The joining of the substrate and the filling of the second material would then act as attachment point for other materials that can be welded, soldered, or secured.

Apple to Give OS X 10.10 a 'Flatter' Look
Apple will reportedly give OS X 10.10 a 'flatter' design but it won't be as stark as iOS 7's look.

Mark Gurman reports that he is expecting OS X 10.10 to have user-interface tweaks that will make the interface “flatter,” but not as stark as iOS 7′s look. I’d also expect some blur and translucency effects in a few places, but not in anyway that is central to the experience like it is on iOS. There will be a little bit more white space, more defined menu bars, and squared-off window controls, but I would not expect a full color palette change and redesigns for every single application and icon.

Swype, a currently popular gesture-based keyboard, only offers one handed swiping and does not allow users to switch between swipes and standard key entry. Swype is owned by Nuance and has only been released for Android devices. Despite talks with Apple, the keyboard has yet to make its way to iOS.
Yose Widjaja, the creator of the keyboard in Hipjot, says "With two finger inputs, you can be a lot more explicit in your touches, so it allows you to type without choosing what you want to type, most of the time, while retaining a comfortable swipe where you want to. One finger swipes are inferior in that words like 'paraphernalia' forces your finger to go left/right so much."

How to Edit Hosts file in Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks
The hosts file is used by your computer to map hostnames to IP addresses.
By adding or removing lines to your hosts file you can change where certain domains will point when you access them in a browser or using other software. You can block certain hosts names, like ad-serving/malicious hosts, or used for web development purposes, i.e. to redirect domains to local addresses.
This is an important file and one that is under the computer administrator’s control, so you’ll need an account with full privileges to make any changes.
Making a backup of the hosts file can be a good idea if you plan on making significant changes or just want to play around with modifications and see what happens.
Step 1: Launch Terminal, found in /Applications/Utilities/ or launched through Spotlight

Apple's 12 Days of Gifts Day 9: iTunes Festival Kings of Leon Single
Day 9 of Apple's 12 Days of Gifts offers the iTunes Festival: London 2013 Kings of Leon Single as a free download.
Initially embraced as "the Southern Strokes" for their resurrection and reinvention of Dixie-styled rock & roll, Kings of Leon steadily morphed themselves into an experimental rock outfit during the 2000s. The Tennessee-bred quartet debuted in 2003 with the Holy Roller Novocaine EP, whose blend of raw, unpolished boogie rock was further explored on their debut full-length, Youth & Young Manhood. Such revivalist music was matched by a similarly revivalist appearance — including long hair, mustaches, and tight-fitting denim — and Kings of Leon experienced immediate popularity in the U.K. (where they would later enjoy platinum album sales, despite an initially lukewarm reception at home).

How To Reset Mac's PRAM in OS X 10.9 Mavericks
Sometimes your Mac's parameter RAM (PRAM) becomes scrambled and needs to be reset. This can cause startup problems for your Mac. This small piece of memory isn’t erased or forgotten when you shut down your Mac.
A small amount of your computer’s memory, called “parameter random-access memory” or PRAM, stores certain settings in a location that OS X can access quickly. The particular settings that are stored depend on your type of Mac and the types of devices connected to it. The settings include your designated startup disk, display resolution, speaker volume, and other information.
