Skype for Mac 6.11 Brings Improved Search

Skype has announced the release of Skype for Mac 6.11 which brings the ability to search into the past and search for additional types of messages.
We focused on quality in this release, with fixes for several different crashes and hangs reported to us by users. We also fixed a host of other bugs, including:
* Full-text search of messages with Unicode characters was failing on 10.6.
* Infinite scrolling was sometimes broken on Mavericks.
* A disk I/O issue prevented a small number of users from logging in.
* Dragged links were blurry when dragged to a display of a different resolution.
* File transfer messages were displaying incorrectly if they were scrolled just right.

In addition, we improved searching to allow you to more easily find all relevant content. You’ll see this in the new behavior of the conversation’s find toolbar, which now searches into the past for you. Less scrolling FTW! You can also search for more types of messages in the Search field, including file transfers.

Apple Improves App Store Search Engine to Correct Misspelt Queries

Apple has made changes to its App Store search engine to take into account misspelled words.
A recent change to Apple’s App Store search engine now leads to improved search results for misspelled queries with small typos, we’ve learned. In addition, searchers looking for an app they know by name, but are unsure if it has spaces in the title, are also seeing better results. For example, those looking for the highly ranked “QuizUp” game wouldn’t have found it before if they had typed in “Quiz Up” with a space. Now it appears.
The site believes these changes went into effect a few weeks ago and could lead to increased downloads for some developers with hard to spell or commonly misspelt app titles.

ury Verdict: Samsung Owes Apple $290 Million in Additional Damages

A federal jury has ruled that Samsung owes Apple $290 million in damages for infringing on its patents.

The award concludes a partial retrial of last year’s landmark case between the electronics giants. A jury in that case ruled in Apple’s favor and awarded $1 billion in damages. However, Judge Lucy Koh ruled that more than $400 million of that award was improperly calculated, necessitating the current retrial. Apple had argued it was due a further $379 million, while Samsung maintained it should only owe $52 million for the portion of damages being reconsidered. Barring a successful appeal, Samsung also owes roughly $600 million in damages from the original verdict as well.

Apple Deal With GTAT Could Produce Sapphire Crystal for 50 Million 5-Inch iPhone Displays Annually

Apple's new manufacturing deal with GT Advanced Technologies will boost production capacity allowing the company to produce enough sapphire material to make 5-inch sapphire screen covers for 33.79-50.56 million iPhones per year.

US$578 million can be used to procure 1,930-2,890 sapphire growing furnaces for a monthly production of 5.28-7.90 million mm of 2-inch-equivalent sapphire ingots, Digitimes Research indicated. Such a volume of sapphire ingots could be used to make screen covers for 33.79-50.56 million 5-inch iPhones a year, accounting for 17.8-26.6% of the estimated 190 million iPhones to be shipped in 2014.

Low Retina Display iPad Mini Supply Blamed on Sharp Display Burn-In

Low supplies of Apple's upcoming Retina Display iPad mini are being blamed on a burn-in problem with Sharp's IGZO panel.

The burn-in problem was caused by the drastic reduction of the pixel size. The resolution of the 7.9-inch iPad mini with Retina display is 2048×1536, about four times clearer than the existing 1024×768 products. LG Display used the amorphous silicon (a-Si) for the substrate, whereas Sharp used IGZO. The pixel of the smartphone display is smaller than that of the iPad mini Retina panel, but as the Low Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon (LTPS) technology is used, it can be produced stably. The pixel of the iPad mini Retina is the smallest among those products using a-Si. Sharp failed to solve the chronic problem of IGZO, i.e. uniformity, and its yield went down.

How to Install Java in OS X Mavericks

Java has plenty of real-world applications and uses, but because it has been used as an attack vector in the past, Apple has made OS X reasonably aggressive in limiting Java on Macs. As a result, Mavericks does not come with Java preinstalled, and upgraded Macs will remove Java in Mavericks installation process.
For most users this is a very good thing, it further reduces the unlikely event of a trojan or something nefarious being installed on Macs, and many Mac users won’t notice Java missing at all. On the other hand, many of us do need Java installed in OS X.

Many common applications use Java, ranging from the excellent cloud backup service CrashPlan, to the Eclipse IDE, and even some online banking and financial services, and without installing Java yourself in Mavericks you’ll find these apps and websites simply don’t work. Fortunately it’s a simple fix, and you can go about installing Java on OS X Mavericks in several different ways.
