Pegatron Now Using Facial Recognition to Scan for Underage Workers

Pegatron is now using facial recognition to scan for underage workers and applicants with borrowed ID cards.

The company revealed details of the system following the death of a 15-year-old underage worker who fell ill with pneumonia. Apple and Pegatron have determined the dead was not due to working conditions at the factory.

Pegatron said applicants for its assembly line have their government-issued IDs checked for authenticity. Their faces are then matched to their ID photos through facial recognition technology, to weed out those using borrowed ID cards. Their names are also checked against police records. In theory, these measures should keep out underage workers, as they should catch people using fake or borrowed IDs. In Mr. Shi’s case, he was able to obtain a government-issued ID card that included his photo but another person’s identifying information, the company said.

"Quick" History of Apple Mac OS X

OS X is the newest of Apple Inc.'s Mac OS line of operating systems.

Although, under its original name of Mac OS X, it was officially designated as simply "version 10" of the Mac OS, "version 9" had a completely different codebase, file system, design, and hardware support. Mac OS had been Apple's primary operating system since 1984, and the family was backward compatible, so OS X supported an emulated version 9 until version 10.5.

Unlike its predecessor, OS X is a Unix operating system built on technology that had been developed at NeXT through the second half of the 1980s and up until Apple purchased the company in early 1997. It was first released in 1999 as Mac OS X Server 1.0, with a desktop-oriented version (Mac OS X v10.0) following in March 2001. Since then, six more distinct "client" and "server" editions of Mac OS X were released, thereafter starting with Mac OS X v10.7 Lion, OS X Server is no longer offered as a separate operating system product; instead, the server management tools are available for purchase separately. The most recent version OS X 10.9 Mavericks was first made available on October 22, 2013.

Some Users Report Degrading Touch ID Accuracy

Dr. Drang, a consulting engineer, recently reported noticing a degradation in the accuracy of Touch ID on the iPhone 5s over time.

I’ve been using Touch ID since I got an iPhone 5s in mid-October. Generally speaking, I like it, and I find it faster than the old swipe-and-passcode method, but I’ve felt compelled to reteach it my fingerprints twice already. I know this sounds impossible, but its recognition of my prints seems to decay with time. I rescanned my fingers this weekend, and Touch ID has been amazingly fast and accurate since then. Just as it was when I first got the 5s, and just as it was a few weeks later when I rescanned my fingers for the first time. Just before each rescan, though, I was so frustrated with Touch ID I felt like throwing the phone across the room.

Bluetooth SIG Announces New Features for Bluetooth 4.1

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has announced Bluetooth 4.1 which brings updates that will improve consumer usability with increased co-existence support for LTE, bulk data exchange rates, and aid developer innovation by allowing devices to support multiple roles simultaneously. The new release also lays the groundwork for IP-based connections, extending Bluetooth technology's role as the essential wireless link for the IoT.

"Bluetooth Smart technology put us on a rocket ship of growth, with Bluetooth annual product shipment projections skyrocketing to more than 4.5 billion in the next five years," said Suke Jawanda, Bluetooth SIG CMO. "We updated the Bluetooth specification to address this projected growth, making changes to give developers more control in assigning a role to their product, limiting interference with other wireless technologies, and allowing Bluetooth Smart products to exchange data faster and maintain connections with less manual intervention. These updates reflect the demand we see in the market. We will continue to sculpt Bluetooth wireless technology to extend its critical role in enabling the Internet of Things and ensure it is the very best solution for OEMs, developers and, ultimately, consumers."

youVerify for iPhone helps reassure buyers that your items are the real deal, not a scam

youVerify is a new app for iPhone that aims to help reassure buyers that sellers aren't just trying to scam them. Anyone that's ever dealt with selling electronics on eBay or Craigslist is probably well aware of how many scammers there are out there. youVerify works by verifying not only you, but the products you're trying to sell. In turn, buyers can be confident that your items are what they say they are.

Upon first downloading youVerify, you are asked to create a profile. You're asked for basic information such as name, address, phone, and so on. You are also asked to link your Facebook and LinkedIn profiles. These aren't shown to buyers but used to verify that you are who you say you are.

After you've completed profile registration, you can then start verifying your items with youVerify. Just search for the item you're trying to sell and you'll be asked to take a series of photos of them. youVerify will provide examples of what kinds of photos are acceptable. After you're done, youVerify will check the authenticity of your photos and email you a link to your youVerify report.

Three UK begins its 4G LTE roll out, slowly and quietly

The day many UK based iPhone owners is finally upon us, kind of. Three has begun the rollout of its fledgling 4G LTE network by way of a soft launch right now limited to just a few thousand customers in London. It will expand, but as Three confirmed to Android Central, there's a plan and a reason:
The reason for this, Three tell us, is to ensure the smoothest possible rollout for its 4G network, though a side-effect of this staged rollout has been a stream of tweets from disgruntled Three subscribers. The carrier previous committed to a launch in London, Manchester and Birmingham in December, but made no mention of its plans to restrict this to a small number of customers at the get-go.

Apple's Market Share Boost From iPhone 5s/5c is Smaller Than Boost From iPhone 5

Apple's market share has received a boost from the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c but has not seen the same uplift as when the iPhone 5 was released, according to sales data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech for the three months to October 2013.

Kantar notes that across the major European markets, Android remains number one with 70.9% share. Apple holds 15.8% share and Windows continues to see rapid growth, now accounting for 10.2% share.

Dominic Sunnebo, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, comments: "In almost all markets, the iPhone 5S and 5C releases have given iOS a significant bounce compared to the previous month. Generally, Apple’s share of the market still remains lower than when the iPhone 5 was released, although this is not wholly unexpected as shoppers tend to react more positively to ‘full’ releases than incremental improvements such as the 5S and 5C."

Initially Steve Jobs Didn't Like the Idea of White Apple Products

Steve Jobs initially didn't like the idea of white Apple products, reveals author Leander Kahney in his new book 'Jony Ive: The Genius Behind Apple's Greatest Products'.

Apple started to make white products in 2001 even though Steve Jobs was not a fan of the idea.

"Initially, Jobs's instincts were against white products," says Leander Kahney. However, Jony Ive, Apple's head of design was in favor of using white. He'd been making products out of white plastic since his school days. And partially in reaction to the colorful phase Apple went through with the translucent iMac, he made the iBook in white plastic and wanted to continue that with the iPod.
