Apple Reduces Top Charts on iOS from 300 to 150 Apps

Over the weekend, Apple made a change to its "Top Charts" section in the iOS App Store.

Now, Apple is only featuring the Top 150 paid, free and top grossing applications, while previously it would show the top 300. Half of the apps that previously relied on the Top Charts for discovery and download, will now have to be found via search or category.

On the desktop, the App store shows the top 200 apps, so the change only is affecting the mobile version of the App Store.

Third Jailbreak of iOS 7.1.1

In addition to i0n1c and winocm, there's now a third party claiming to have jailbroken iOS 7.1.1.
Researchers Yeongjin Jang and Tielei Wang of the Georgia Tech Information Security Center (GTISC) disclosed that they jailbroke iOS 7.1.1 late last month. Jang (@blue9057), a grad student at Gatech, has posted a video to YouTube demonstrating the jailbreak.

This is what I did on iPhone 5s, with iOS 7.1.1. The work includes followings. 1. Bypassing sandbox, 2. Getting root permission, and 3. bypassing codesign

@osxreverser and @i0n1c appear to confirm it's legit.

I0n1c Explains How His iOS 7.1.1 Jailbreak Works

Stefan Esser, a hacker known as i0n1c, has posted an explanation of how his jailbreak of iOS 7.1.1 works.
The jailbreak, which has not yet been released, is unique in that it uses a kernel bug which is hidden inside functionality that can be easily reached, even from within the iOS application sandbox.

This means that the exploit code can be used to break out of any application that you exploit. This is very different from nearly all of the kernel vulnerabilities used in iOS jailbreaks since iOS 4. There have been only 2 publicly disclosed vulnerabilities that had this power. The first has been used in comex's JailbreakMe3 and the other one is the posix_spawn() vulnerability disclosed by SektionEins during SyScan 2013 and later used by the jailbreak community in the p0sixpwn jailbreak.

Winocm claims the jailbreak is untethered and that it should work on other devices if 'you put in the effort'

Oh yeah, this is iOS 7.1.1 untethered if you didn't notice earlier. (iPhone 4 GSM though, don't want to mess with any other devices that I have. Would work elsewhere... if you put in the effort. ジ)

Apple Acquires LuxVue Technology a Micro-LED Display Company

Apple has acquired LuxVue Technology, a company that is developing micro-LED screen technologies.

The company previous raised $43 million in funding from Kleiner Perkins, iD Ventures America, and others.

LuxVue had managed to remain fairly quiet over the past few years, and what we know is that the company develops low-power, micro-LED-based displays for consumer electronics. We’ve heard Apple acquired the company to add to its hardware innovations area. Because the company is working on mirco-LED displays, this could mean that the technology could be integrated into Apple’s hardware for better battery life and screen brightness.

Apple Has Reportedly Begun Production of the iWatch in Small Quantities

Apple has reportedly begun production of the iWatch in small quantities, according to supply chain sources cited by the China Times.
Additionally, it's reported that the iWatch will be built using SiPs (System-in-Package modules) rather than PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards), meaning that the iWatch's processor, memory, storage, and other components will likely be wrapped up into a single package.

Kinsus Interconnect Technology Corp, NanyaPCB and ASE Group (a.k.a. Advanced Semiconductor) are said to be the ones responsible for the production of the SiP modules.

Apple to Release iWatch in Multiple Sizes, Cost Could Rise To Several Thousand Dollars

In his recently released Apple Roadmap, KGI Securities analyst Ming Chi Kuo reveals his predicted specifications for iWatch, which will reportedly ship in Q3 2014.

The iWatch is said to come in 1.3-inch and 1.5-inch sizes to accommodate different sized wrists. Both will utilize flexible AMOLED displays with sapphire glass covers for scratch protection. The device will integrate numerous biometric sensors, a NFC chip, and have a slim, light, 'fashionable appearance'.

Kuo thinks that the watch's mechanical parts could be made with liquidmetal and it may have an 'innovative' antenna design that would allow for wireless charging. The battery is estimated at 200 to 250mAh in size and will last for at least a day of operation. Apple is expected to beat rival devices in this area due to its "vertically integrated operating system and key components."
